Your child's brain is the prize. Your evening is the prize. Your focus is the prize. The longer they hold it, the more it's worth.

We were taught that dopamine is the chemistry of joy. That is a half-truth weaponised against us.

Dopamine is the chemistry of seeking — of anticipating the next swipe, the next like, the next outrage. It is the engine of compulsion, not satisfaction. The screen rewards the seeking, never the arriving.

An adult can sometimes catch this trick. A nine-year-old cannot. A teenage girl scrolling a feed designed to make her hate her face cannot. The brain in front of the algorithm has not finished growing. The algorithm has.

App-level controls beg the apps to behave. They don't. Browser extensions die when the kid opens the native app. Phone screen-time settings break the moment a determined twelve-year-old discovers Settings → Reset.
